Developed by the University of Leicester in collaboration with local, national and international partners, Space Park is a landmark initiative to create a world-leading cluster for innovative research, enterprise and education in space and Earth observation. It will help the UK capture a growing share of the burgeoning space market.
The Space Park development will provide state-of-the-art facilities for space research, development and manufacturing. It will house industry partners together with academia. By drawing on the expertise of both industry and academia, working together in one location, Space Park Leicester will drive research excellence and the application of that research. There have already been a number of public announcements of organisations intending to grow their presence at Space Park, attracted by the academic talent, research programmes, equipment and access to skilled students and graduates.
Phase 1 of the development provides accommmodation linked to research and applications of space data and phase 2 on research into AI and robot-assisted satellite production.
Space Park Leicester will support and be pivotal to the Government’s Industrial Strategy to capture a significant share of the £400 billion global space market. Additionally, it is anticipated that the project will be beneficial for the local and regional economy, creating over 2500 jobs.
It was opened by UK astronaut Tim Peake and has built an impressive reputation for itself working on ground-breaking projects such as NASA’s internationally acclaimed James Webb Space Telescope.
Space Park Leicester opened in 2021 and has won the following awards:
