Wildlife and community haven created through teamwork

We have delivered £2 million of benefit to the community of Crewe while constructing a new multi-storey car park and bus station for Cheshire East Borough Council.

The social value created included helping The Railway Cottages Association create a wildlife haven in the heart of the town.

Central’s Social Value Manager, Kasia Kowolska and the site team enlisted the generous support of subcontractors Afan Landscapes Ltd and Hannafin Contractors Ltd and helped transform a 300ft long border that hasn’t been touched since 1978, with the area blighted by anti-social behaviour.

They worked closely with the association, Cheshire Wildlife Trust, Crewe YMCA, Men in Sheds and the public to come up with new designs for the space to increase biodiversity and bring the community together. This inner-city space has now been transformed into a community garden with planters, a composting area, and areas of native and wildflowers with bug and insect hotels, and will hopefully inspire others to regenerate other neglected urban areas. This was just one of the initiatives that contributed to us delivering £2m of social value on the project.
