Tesco Store, Telford

Tesco, Telford - 1

Value: £16m
Completion date: Mar. '10
Contract period: 90 weeks

Tesco Telford is a mixed use development comprising a 30,000 sq ft retail store, 12 retail units, 14 housing association apartments and a new high street.

The scheme replaced the former town centre built in the late 60’s with a modern and sustainable alternative.

The tight site required progressive demolition for the existing buildings and phased construction of the new. A temporary retail store was built within the first phase of the new store to maintain retail provision to the community.

The scheme included extensive highways works including a new section 38 high street along with section 278 works around the site periphery and two new public squares.

The housing association apartments were built to code of sustainable homes level 3, NHBC build mark and secure by design. The existing library was provided with a new lift and stair tower to provide access for all phasing of the works and was organised to ensure all retailers could remain trading during construction prior to making orderly transfers to their new units. This was achieved without disruption.

By reworking the original programme to the phased approach a 30 week improvement was provided to the client. the store was delivered snag free for opening.

Zero waste to landfill was achieved on the scheme with 8% recycling and 20% refuse derived fuels.
