Bowmer & Kirkland construct carbon negative store extension
This new extension to the existing store at Pityme, Durham has added 50% more floor area but has reduced the energy required to run it by 10%.
The reduction in CO2 has been delivered by the inclusion of new technologies including a biomass CHP unit and Co2 refrigeration systems. The extension has been constructed utilising a sectional timber cross laminate panelled system. Reducing the need for a steel frame and this "low-carbon" construction alongside high energy efficiency and renewable energy generated on site means that even the carbon generated will be neutralised after only 2 years.
The project was delivered in 26 weeks with only a short 1 week closure at the end of the project to allow systems to be changed over and the new store to be fully re-merchandised, and with minimal disruption to normal trade.
Neil Sachdev, Sainsbury’s Commercial Director said "it seems rather counterintuitive, but by adding this space to the building, we are actually reducing its overall environmental impact and we regard this as a great feat and a sign of things to come...it’ll reduce our costs and put us in a better position against our competitors"
Delivering all of these new technologies to an existiong "live store environment" was challenging for both the B&K team and the specialist contractors, but the end result, as can be seen from the selection of photographs was well worth the effort
“I wanted to write and thank you personally for your hard work and commitment in making sure the Murrayfield Store development was a success and was ready to open on time. I had the pleasure to be at the store on opening day and it looked fantastic. It was really great to witness the fruits of your endeavours and I am really proud of you and your teams' achievements. Well done.”
