ASDA Superstore, Oldham

Asda-Oldham

Value: £6.6m
Completion date: July 2007
Contract period: 25 weeks

The country's first ever, 35,000 sq ft,  purpose-built timber frame store at Shaw, near Oldham has been built using a timber 'Glulam' frame; eradicating the need to use 500 tonnes of steel, thereby saving 450 tonnes of carbon emissions. The store is built on the site of an old red-brick cotton mill and as many bricks from the original building were used in construction of the new store.

The store also has four runs of Northlights which provide two functions; firstly ingress of natural light to reduce the use of artificial lighting, therefore using less energy; secondly, there are low level motorised louvres which are linked to the northlights, these act as natural cross ventilation when the temperature is too great in the store, again this reduces the need for cooling via air conditioning during warm spells.

The south facing roof captures light and heat from the sun and is made from 85% recyclable aluminium wich has the added benefit of being longer lasting than PVC. The new store will be 20% more energy efficient than initally planned and will form the blueprint for future store developments for ASDA.
