Asda’s Green Store
Arguably the UK’s Greenest Store opened for business recently in Bootle, Liverpool
For the first time, many elements of new, green technology were put together to produce a genuinly Low Carbon Store in terms of both construction and operation, with a target 8% saving in electricity costs and use 30% less energy than its previous bench mark store. To achieve this, an extended commissioning period was agreed to ensure all of these individual elements worked as planned.
These include:-
CO2 Refrigeration System, first to be used in this country
Natural Lighting to Sales Area from North Lights, Sunpipes and Kalwall
Timber Structure frame supplied and erected by B&K Timber Structures
External Elevations constructed from recycled bricks and timer cladding
Kerbstones manufactured from Asda Corner Bags
Doors on all freezers, fridges, chillers
Ground Source Heat Pump
Biomass Boiler
Geothermal heating & cooling via an underslab system
Rainwater harvesting system
Elements of surfacing from recycled aggregates
Seedon Roof
Timber stud sustainable partitions in lieu of metal.
The Bowmer & Kirkland team worked closely with Asda’s team led by Bob Simpson and Mark Orpin to achieve , for the time being at least, the most carbon efficient, Ecosuperstore in the UK.
