Madeley Academy and Training Centre, Telford

Madeley Academy

Value: £19.6m
Completion date: August 2009
Contract period: 84 weeks

The construction of a 2/3 storey main academy building and single storey vocational training centre.

The new academy is constructed on the site of the existing terraced sports fields and involved split level construction.

The main building is of steel frame construction with glazed curtain walling and polished blockwork facade; it features a main entrance and central circular turret with glazed panels.

The project includes a large sports hall facility, a separate theatre area with retracting seating, acoustic musical areas and a circular state-of-the-art fitness area. A central restaurant area has a large kitchen and servery facilities.

The corridors are naturally lit with glazed roof atria, the building sources some of its power from three external wind turbines and an underground heat recovery system. Each classroom has underfloor heating and electrical operational windows linked in with the main heating to cool rooms when required.

The vocational training centre has separate areas for skills to be taught in computing, catering, hairdressing and construction. The academy now teaches 900 pupils full time and achieved an outstanding review in a recent Offsted audit of the new building facility and teaching standards.
