There’s a new life beginning at the former Jessop Hospital for Women. Bowmer & Kirkland is redeveloping the Leavygreave Road site for the University of Sheffield, with the construction of an impressive new academic building.
The project reached a milestone this week with the ‘topping out’ of the new Jessop West building. An important date in the construction industry, ‘topping out’ recognises the completion of the frame of a building.
The University’s Vice-Chancellor Professor Keith Burnett and representatives from the academic departments that will be housed at the new site, joined Bowmer & Kirkland staff and members of the project team to take part in a short ceremony to mark the occasion.
Professor Keith Burnett was invited to pour the final bit of concrete for the roof of the five-storey building.
He said: “I am very proud of this building and today’s ceremony is a wonderful occasion. It really marks a new beginning for Arts and Humanities at the University of Sheffield. It’s a marvellous thing to see it developing and everyone involved is doing a terrific job.”
Bowmer & Kirkland Area Director, Steve Chambers, said: “We are extremely proud to be developing this site for such a prestigious client and it is wonderful to be working on a building which is set to be a landmark building for both the University and the city.”
The new building will house the University’s School of Modern Languages and Linguistics, History and English Departments.
The Jessop Hospital for Women was opened in 1878 with money provided by Thomas Jessop – a steel magnate and former Mayor of the city.
The buildings will be ready during the academic year 2008/09.
